Expo M.A.C.Exposition M.A.C.

So grab a handful of Euros or Mao Bucks and head on down to Anno Domini located between U.S. Routes 101 and 280 in Silicon Valley, California. The Graffiti Research Lab is dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists, pranksters and protesters with open source tools for urban communication. The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter their surroundings on the scale of advertisers, corporations and the state in order to reclaim public space from both authoritarian and consumer culture. GRL Weapons of Mass Defacement (WMDs) are the result of numerous grants, awards and commissions from rogue governments, educational institutes and arts organizations. They have shown their work on five continents and will be featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Tate Modern in London and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in 2008. Their first documentary video, "GRL: The Complete First Season", recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. They have been featured in or contributed to publications, books and other mass media, like the New York Times, Time Magazine, Time Asia, The Taipei Times, Excelsior, Time Out New York, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Wired, Il Corriere Della Sera, NBC, ABC, CNN, Boingboing.net, Digg.com and on the front page of Youtube. But more importantly, thousands of ubiquitous, clandestine agents have been trained, via the web, to use GRL tools and techniques to create their own public interventions all over the world. Graffiti Research Lab splinter cells have formed in Amsterdam, Vienna, Barcelona, Toronto, Tijuana, Hong Kong, Taipei, Minneapolis and Australia and the GRL NYC is honored to be New York's elected representative to the U.S. Department of Homeland Graffiti. The GRL is a Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.) production headquartered in the County of Kings: Brooklyn, NY. We are the GRL and we approve of this message. THE NEW DUTCH MASTER - DELTATuesday - Saturday 12 - 6pm, Thursdays 'til 9pm DELTA is renowned for his complex three dimensional styles and visually spectacular, architecturally structured lettering. Elms Lester Painting Rooms are pleased to present a much awaited exhibition of DELTA' s latest work: a showcase of the Dutch master's graphic and architecturally inspired works, including new paintings, 3D constructivist pieces and complex collages. Boris Tellegen, aka DELTA, is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from Amsterdam who skilfully experiments with a variety of mediums in order to create his amazingly intricate paintings, prints, 3D sculptures, video works and installations. His work reminds the old Utopists and Constructivists and can be seen as portraits of industrial architecture. The first DELTA tag appeared on the streets in 1984: through the years this Netherlands based artist has developed a complex and unique style that resembles isometric plans and plays with ideas of architecture and high tech futuristic vehicles.DELTA introduces an alien and idiosyncratic aesthetic into graffiti art that escapes the common logo-like word IDs. He has influenced writers all over the world for decades with his 3D letter style. Boris Tellegen was born in 1968. He became one of the pioneers of the European graffiti movement, in 1984, when he made his tag DELTA for the first time. His work shows the hallmark of his time at the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Technical University Delft, from where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Design Engineering in 1994. Delta's fine art paintings and sculptures have recently been exhibitied in Singapore / Malaysia, London and Italy. He has also produced work for musicians such as Linkin Park, Dj Vadim (Ninja Tune), Rima project on Jazzanova Compost Records, Dub Records and Alex Cortez. DELTA has exhibited with Elms Lesters Painting Rooms since 2003 and this will be his first solo show in UK.

Sofia MaldonadoThe Tropical Storm
Opening reception: Thursday, May 15th, 6-8pm Magnan Emrich Contemporary is pleased to announce the debut solo show of Puerto Rican artist Sofia Maldonado. The exhibition presents video, paintings, and a large sculpture installation. The exhibition will be on view from May 15th - June 23st, 2008. The Tropical Storm is a three-part project blending elements of street culture like skateboarding, punk rock and graffiti with a feminine Latina aesthetic and the chaotic natural energy of the Caribbean. The different elements of the project -The Bowl, Broken Boards and The Skate Bags - originate from the artist's objective to open a dialogue on the renovation of neglected public spaces and how fashion and consumerism influence counterculture youth movements (particularly how these movements are integrated into products and industries). A skate mini-ramp will be installed in the center of the gallery designed and painted by the artist and will be available for local urban daredevils to attempt during the opening (thanks to the help of http://rockstarbearings.com Sofia Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico in 1984. She received her BFA from Escuela de Artes Plasticas in San Juan and will complete her MFA in Painting from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY this spring. She has taught various workshops on murals, as well as exhibited in Europe, New York, and Puerto Rico. Her collaborations with the exit collective were recently included in the "S" Files" Biennial at El Museo del Barrio in New York, NY. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

Kelsey Brookes and AJ Fosik
Opening Reception Saturday May 10th 2008 Runs Through June 7th 2008 White Walls Gallery 835 Larkin Street SF CA 94109 www.whitewallssf.com 415.931.1500 Kelsey Brookes is a former biochemist who attributes his raw styleto an educational system that refuses to teach scientists how to draw. With this his paintings explode with a figurative nature that is influenced by Hindu an Buddhist deities, exotic animals and sex as well as rustic American quilts. Each Figure is adorned with ghostly representations of the natural world... animals and plants that unfold from the body into the surrounding canvas. His chimeras are frozen with animalistic intensity in explosive and sometimes tortured positions. AJ Fosik's eclectic handmade and intricately designed wood animal sculptures and paintings, combined with cryptic symbols, intrigue and provoke. Fosik creates an experience that at first glance evokes a questioning of familiar concepts and then pushes the viewer to look and think deeper. Inspired by subversive cultural influences which shift complacency, he creates pieces that suspend comfort while at the same time offer recognizable symbols and images. In this dynamic tension the art and the viewer hopefully come together in an expanded definition of culture and assumption.

That is a great way to explain the art world of yesteryear. Yet in this time and age there seems to be many pseudonyms for contemporary art and urban mediums. When an artist starts in a street or public setting and then brings that medium inside we aim to label it "Street Art." As to avoid labeling it what it is, Graffiti. Friday May 30th we welcome back an Arizona local who was notorious in the street scene merely 12 months ago. Pandas are the driving force that the viewer draws familiarity to witnessing in his work. This weekend that friendly smile and tenacity for "getting over" come to Brand X Clothing. This show is packed with multi mediums that thread together the exhibit like a tapestry of tastes throughout a visual stimulus for the observers taking. The art displayed is ranging from Wheat paste to silk screen & water colors. When fusing street art into the gallery format you often risk losing the look and feel that appeal to the work. Yet with this exhibit Disposable Hero brings a group of heavy hitters to support. Additional art featured: Local legend Mad One, HMPH, DOVE & FVS. There work combined can be seen on many street corners, back alleys and street stop signs covering the Arizona landscape. Come join us for an evening of Art, Music & Fashion.

Death Head
Growing up in Mexico, Death Head was greatly inspired by the annual holiday known as "Day of the Dead". Taking this century old tradition of celebrating life and death, and embracing it with a Punk Rock lifestyle and "fuck you" attitude, Death Head emerged as a cultural hybrid…forging the colors, sounds, spirituality, political and economical traits of these genera's. Interpreting life through the brutal, animalistic, primal side of humanity, Death Head began abstracting human faces (including his own) into a diversity of animal skulls, creating the inner man we all try to hide or deny. Death Head views himself as a shaman of sorts, as the doorman for the truth seekers looking for the occult, the macabre and spiritual awakening. His work brings the viewer closer to nature and helps bridge the gap between life, death, and the universe as a whole. Aerosol Warfare is proud to showcase Death Head in his 1st solo exhibition. Come out and experience a full interactive installation in Houston's premier gallery space. Opening Reception for the artist: May 9th, 2008, 6pm to 11pm. THE THREAT OF CHANCE
Opening Reception: Friday, May 2nd, 7pm - 10pm The Threat of Chance art exposition is based on the temptation of possibility. Amidst a gallery filled of shacks made with found material and walls decorated with freight trains and decaying industry you will find photographs by boxcar culture enthusiast the Polaroid Kidd. Proletarian signs, flags, prints, and banners from author/activist Josh MacPhee. Urban Art Show
THE OLD CINEMA will host an exhibition of urban art from 1st May with a private view on the first night. British and international street artists will showcase their work at the west London department store giving the public a rare opportunity to buy fresh art ahead of the galleries. THE OLD CINEMA has become well-known for blending iconic styles of the past with contemporary design and hope that participating artists will relish the concept of placing their modern work with formal antique, vintage industrial and retro furniture. Following the success of the young directors at the Short Films Night late last year, THE OLD CINEMA is hoping to bring more creative talent to a wider audience with its urban art show. Work on display will vary in format and size.

La Brea Ave Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art presents Witnessed From Afar, a showcase of artwork by Andrew Pommier, Irina Troitskaya, Karen Preston, Ken Garduno, Mel Kadel, Michael Hsiung, and Parskid. In an atmosphere of effervescent quietude, gorgeous misfits and delicate animals float across paper, cardboard, and wood - lost and lonely, but swelling with emotion and extraordinary grace. Evoking forgotten pains and philosophical yearnings, the artists contemplate the oddities of life and death with warmth and sincerity, yet always maintain their distance. Witnessed From Afar will be on view April 26 through May 18, 2008, with an opening reception held on April 26, from 8 p.m. to Midnight.

Greg LamarcheThings I Picked up Along the Way
Opening reception: Saturday, April 19, 7 - 10pm White Walls Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in San Francisco by New York collage artist Greg Lamarche. This exhibition celebrates 27 years of writing graffiti and making collages with the new series 27 Tags. The deceptively simple collages from old and discarded papers form an autobiographical survey of hand-style. The series illustrates the progression from past to present and how graffiti, text, letters and hand-style are the basis of all his work. In the site-specific installation Things I Picked up Along the Way, uncut papers and other found materials are tacked to the walls of the gallery making a larger than life size collage. The accumulation of material is central to his artistic process and each element has particular significance and meaning. The installation also reveals the sources and inspirations which result in the surrounding collages. Born and raised in New York City, Greg Lamarche has been collecting crap and making collages since the sixth grade when he used spent fire works, rolling papers and empty bags of angel dust he gathered from the local schoolyards as material. He began writing graffiti in 1981 (SP one) and published Skills magazine during the early 90s. He has worked both as a designer and artist since 2000. Recent commercial clients include Nike, Roxy/Quiksilver, VH1, Prestel and Six Pack. He is profiled in the June issue of Print magazine. This spring and summer his work will be featured in the Happening a traveling multimedia exhibition and festival in Hong Kong, Sydney, London and Paris. White Walls Gallery

GhostBLVD Gallery is proud to present new works from NYC Graffiti Legend GHOST a/k/a Cousin Frank, a pioneering influence for many graffiti artists around the world. Having started writing in the golden age of the late 1970's, Ghost has first hand knowledge of the many adventures and accomplishments of the NYC subway graffiti movement. The original style, vibrant color combinations, and strong sense of satire of his graffiti has managed to ease the transition naturally to his more gallery oriented pursuits. Ghost has spent many years dedicated to the formation ( or deformation ) of the standard English alphabet creating limitless possibilities for him to subvert the language in his unique style. He has managed to create work that bears the unmistakable mark of an accomplished draughtsman without it being either overbearing or overwrought. The humor that permeates Ghosts' work comes from the underground comics tradition from his youth, more Zapp! Comix than Marvel. Ghosts' improvisational approach to graffiti, he never planned ahead what his work would be like, gives his current series of paintings a lightness and spontaneity that has the feeling of an inside joke between old friends. Ghost has shown his work in galleries across the globe and has become a major part of the visual aesthetic of companies like respected streetwear brand Stussy. There is also a documentary in production chronicling the many contributions Ghost has made to the global graffiti movement. This show will be the second time that BLVD Gallery has been privileged to work with Ghost whose amazing mural in the "Claimin' Space" exhibition was a highlight for many at the 2007 Bumbershoot arts festival. LUCY McLAUCHLAN 'Restricted Freedom' & SLICK 'Ceci n'est pas Graffiti'FIFTY24SF Gallery is pleased to announce the opening solo exhibition of UK-based artist, Lucy McLauchlan as well as Ceci n'est pas Graffiti, a solo exhibition of new graffiti-related work by Los Angeles-based artist, Slick. This will be the first solo show of Lucy's work in the US in which she will present a collection of new paintings incorporated into a site-specific installation that will literally transform the gallery. Working in a style that combines illustrative linework, bitonal colors, figurative subject matter, and primal stylings, Lucy's work is both graphic and subtle at the same time. Expressive faces with delicate expressions inked in black blend together amidst abstract deisgn elements that sweep across the page giving her work a sense of movement and flow. Slick will present large-scale acrylic, marker, and spray paint works on canvas as well as sculpture and a series of smaller, panel pieces. For the subject of this series, Slick uses the train - an urban canvas foreign to him as a youth growing up in Hawaii. Through this series, Slick is able to explore an era of train painting while paying homage to the East Coast graff writers who transformed it into a phenomenon. When known for his graffiti, Slick worked in a highly rendered, 3-dimensional style. For Ceci n'est pas Graffiti, he works in a more gestural style, taking it back to the essence of graff where simpler strokes enabled the artist to work under time constraints. Lucy McLauchlan was born in Birmingham, UK and has shown extensively with international shows at such illustrious galleries as BLK/MRKT Gallery, the Eclectic Gallery in Tokyo, the Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and a recent solo show at Lazarides Gallery. Lucy has been featured in numerous publications, but amongst them are I-D, Vogue, Relax and Lodown magazines. Lucy is also one of the founding members of Beat13, an artist collective that began in Birmingham in 1999 and whose collaborators list includes the animated pop band Gorillaz, Banksy's Pictures on Walls, Keep A Breast Charity and the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Slick was raised in Hawaii and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18. He attended Otis Parsons, and later received training at the Art Center College of Design. It was at Otis Parsons where he met his crew K2S (Kill to Succeed). Slick has founded prominent streetwear companies such as Third Rail Clothing™, Fuct™, Shaolin Worldwide™, Dissizit™, and the toy division STD™. He has worked on special projects with corporations such as Levi's and Nike, and with recording artists, The Pharcyde and Booyaa Tribe. Slick's utilization of computer graphics, painting techniques, and aerosol techniques has presented a style uniquely, and respectively his own. Gallery Hours are 12pm-6pm Tuesday-Saturday or by Appointment

QUIT YOUR SOBBING & CALL ME IN THE AFTERNOONAnthony ListerAnthony Lister is a well-known painter and installation artist. His work shows influence from a number of genre's including street art, expressionism, and pop art from Francis Bacon to Futura 2000. His work often illustrates the marginal aspects of life we'd rather not linger on - people down on their luck, convicted criminals, the drudgery of the daily grind and occasionally drawing from television and such themes as "misguided role models" that result from it. The message is illuminated further in an homage to the late Heath Ledger depicted as the Joker addressing the less glamorous aspects of society and popular culture making it all too real. His most recent works emphasize vagrant superheros exploiting the trite nature of the everyday while exposing its place in the hairy underbelly of society. Lister hails from Brisbane, Australia. He's shown throughout Australia and has held solo shows in NYC and London. He's prolific on the street and on gallery walls and has won many art awards. Lister's work has been collected by National Gallery of Australia, David Roberts Collection , TVS Partnership, Brand and Slater Architects, and BHP Collection. Sat. April 26th New Image Art

DJ Flub will be enthralling the crowd with his razor wit and rocking decks as the benefit guests enjoy both the Ad Hoc Art gallery and the Ad Hoc Art studio, opened to the general public for the first time to highlight the screen-printing facilities and educational programs that instructors from Peripheral Media Projects call home, as well as many local and international artists. "Brick Ladies of NYC"LADY PINK & AIKO
Exhibition dates: March 21 - April 20, 2008 Closing Reception: Sunday April 20th, 6pm - talk with the artists, and SprayMasters screening Lady Pink & AIKO will be in the gallery to talk about their artwork and the experience of working together on this incredible exhibition. This is also the last chance to see their work as this is the last day of the exhibition. Please stop by early as space will be limited. We will be open from 1pm-8pm. The talk will begin around 6pm. Immediately following the lecture, Ad Hoc Art is pleased to present SprayMasters, the new graffiti film by Manny Kirchheimer, starring Lady Pink, Lee Quinones, Futura 2000, and Zephyr. The movie, which features revealing new interviews and rare subway art from 1977, sold out its premiere screenings at the Museum of Modern Art in February. Lady Pink was born in Ecuador, but raised in NYC. In 1979 she started writing graffiti and soon was well known as the only female capable of competing with the boys in the graffiti subculture. Pink painted subway trains from the years 1979-1985. She is considered a cult figure in the hip-hop subculture since the release of the motion picture "Wild Style" in 1982, in which she had a starring role. While still in high school she was already exhibiting paintings in art galleries, and at the age of 21 had her first solo show at the Moore College of Art. As a leading participant in the rise of graffiti-based art, Lady Pink's canvases have entered important art collections such as those of the Whitney Museum, the MET in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum and the Groningen Museum of Holland. She has established herself in the fine arts world, and her paintings are highly prized by collectors. Lady Pink continues to mature as an artist, producing ambitious murals commissioned for businesses and creating new paintings on canvas that express her unique personal vision. Lady Pink recently starred in a documentary film (along with Lee Quinones, Zephyr & Futura 2000) entitled Spraymasters, which recently had it's world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Manhattan. She will also will be taking part in an exhibition at the Bronx Museum almost simultaneously with her show here at Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn and has a vinyl figure coming out through Kid Robot in May of 2008. Aiko was born in Tokyo and currently resides in NYC. Since powerfully breaking out on the fine art scene she has exhibited in such galleries as Merry Karnowsky (Los Angeles), Lineage Gallery (Philadelphia), New Image Art Gallery (Los Angeles), Iguapop Gallery (Spain), Revelations (Tokyo),and Leonard Street Gallery (London). Being an immigrant from Japan, Aiko has herself been discovering Americana-type pop imagery and then re-creating it in new and innovative ways. Aiko's work walks that thin, fragile tightrope between acceptance and disdain, beauty and danger, unconsciously mirroring the day to day life of your average Brooklyn resident. Aiko has a vinyl figure coming out through Kid Robot and has a feature article being published in Juxtapoz magazine almost simultaneously with her show here at Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn. She has also been selected to be on a panel at the Brooklyn Museum in conjunction with the upcoming © MURAKAMI exhibition.

Nothing but the Breaks
Steady Baltimore Presents a group show featuring 70s era themed works on canvas by emerging Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Virginia graffiti and street artists: Jazirock, Blister, Under Water Pirates, Ride, Kepoh, Bob, El Toro, Benny Sars, 5003, Ners Boogie, Adam Neubauer In the '70s, art and music exclusive to the streets and YMCA's of the Bronx personified an inner city environment that begged for an escape from crime and poverty. While POSE 2 designed the fliers and Afrika Bambaataa controlled the crowd with the ones and twos, people from all over NYC for one night forgot about gangs, poverty and politics. Should it be a surprise that with those same hip-hop founding conditions existing in Baltimore today, that it too is seeking an outlet? Steady Baltimore and DIG's "Nothing But the Breaks" has become that outlet for an emerging sub-culture of street and graffiti artists and lovers of funk and soul music. Politics, poverty and crime aside, Nothing But The Breaks is Baltimore's answer to its vices and ills. Opening Reception April 5th 9:00 pm

Amongst artists born in a certain period of time there is an affinity for the animated iconography of the 1980's. In April Meltdown Gallery presents GAG ME WITH A TOON, a new works exhibition that will showcase the work of more than twenty creative souls who have been tainted with the neon fruit stripe of Morning in America. Utilizing everything from the saccharine funk of Strawberry Shortcake to the disciplined fashion fervor of the Baroness of Cobra these artists will explore the sketchy in-betweens of animated femininity. In the gallery we shall weigh the sins of Scrappy-Doo and balance them against the irreligious inclusion of Godzuki, Baby Plas and 7-Zark-7. A measure will be made of thunderous barbarians and thunderous cats and of friends both super and amazing. Be ye short and blue or bionic, a real he-man or just your average joe, you will find yourself transformed after having stood amongst the time-displaced art of these stellar talents.
